Xoloitzcuintli

xoloitzcuintli dog

The Mexican Hairless Dog, also known as the Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced show-low-eats-QUEENT-lee), is a vivacious tiny breed from Mexico with a short-haired or hairless body in dark hues. Xoloitzcuintle is another way to spell the breed’s name. There are three sizes available for the Xolo, as it is affectionately known: standard, miniature, and toy. The Xolo is available in a coated variant as well, though the hairless variety is the most popular. The entire body of coated Xoloitzcuintli is covered with a short, silky coat. Although they occasionally grow a few hair tufts on the top of their heads, on their feet, and on the back of their tails, hairless Xolos have fully exposed skin.

Exercise

When it comes to exercise, Xoloitzcuintli require very little upkeep; a few daily strolls are plenty to keep them fit and healthy.

Grooming

A wash-and-wear dog, the Xoloitzcuintli. The coated version needs only infrequent showers and light brushing (the hairless variety needs no brushing). The version without hair does require regular washes to remove greasy buildup from the skin, followed by lotion application to the entire body. Some Mexican Hairless may require sunscreen made for animals. If you’re curious about how hairless skin feels, it is neither soft nor silky. The skin, however referred to as a hide, is actually thick, resilient, and protective. As the skin transitions during adolescence (usually during the dog’s first year), cradle cap (a waxy accumulation on the skin) and acne (skin outbreaks) are frequent.

Nutrition and Diet

A few Xoloitzcuintli are prone to weight gain. To prevent overfeeding, give your dog high-quality dog food and measure out regular meals using a measuring cup or scale. Weight gain can result from free feeding, which involves leaving food available all day. Dogs who are overweight may develop joint or hip problems as well as other medical diseases including diabetes. The ideal food for your Xolo can be recommended by your breeder or veterinarian.
