Working Kelpie

working kelpie dog breed

The Working Kelpie dog breed was developed in Australia to be a working dog with a focus on managing sheep and other livestock. This medium-sized breed is well-known nowadays for creating attentive and active companions.

Although it should be emphasized that the latter has been evolved to be a more domesticated canine, the breed is occasionally mistakenly thought to be the same as the Australian Kelpie. These dogs may still be found in shelters and rescues despite being purebred. Don’t forget to adopt! If this breed is the one for you, avoid shopping whenever you can.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

Kelpies require a lot of exercise because they were developed to work continuously in demanding settings. For this breed, you’ll require the most fundamental grooming abilities, which is advantageous because you won’t have time for it because you’ll be training your kelpie instead.

Exercise

If you intend to keep your kelpie primarily as a pet, be ready to devote several hours each day to physical activity and mental stimulation, whether it takes the form of jogging, hiking, retrieving games, trick training, herding, agility, swimming, disc dog competitions, or virtually any other competitive canine sport. The kelpie is your dog if you’re seeking a running partner because of the breed’s excellent endurance. A kelpie should not always be kept on a leash. Give people the chance to run for free in a place that’s safe and away from traffic.

Grooming

The short, weatherproof coat on Kelpie is wash-and-wear. If you wish to lessen shedding, brush once a week or more frequently (the coat, although short, sheds a fair amount). When your kelpie becomes dirty, bathe it.

Every two weeks, examine the nails and clip them as necessary. Dogs who work outdoors may naturally wear their nails down, requiring less frequent nail trimming. Check and clean the ears once a month for debris or redness. When the ears get unclean, clean them with cotton balls and pet ear cleaner.
