Wisteria Bonsai

wisteria-bonsai

The wisteria is a robust deciduous vine with alternate complex leaves that grows quickly. It produces tall, drooping clusters of fragrant, bluish-purple flowers in the spring. Less than ten species make up the genus Wisteria, with two endemic to North America and the majority to China and Japan.

Placement

During the growing season, the wisteria should be planted in direct sunlight. For flowers to bloom, sunlight is necessary. When planted in the ground, wisterias are resistant to frost, but when they are grown in pots, the roots need to be protected. A wisteria bonsai tree can survive the winter in a cool but frost-free greenhouse, garage, or shed.

Watering

Throughout the growing season, the wisteria requires a tremendous amount of water. The bonsai pot should be placed in a shallow bowl that is filled with water each time the tree is watered in the summer. Keep the roots wet but not soaked during the autumn and winter. Fertilizing

During the growing season, use a solid organic fertilizer once a month, use a liquid fertilizer once a week, or even both. The wisteria grows quickly and enjoys being well-fed, but use fertilizers with a low nitrogen content. Nitrogen from the atmosphere can be fixed by the wisteria, but too much nitrogen would encourage leaf growth rather than flowering.

Pruning

Early spring or after flowering are the ideal times to perform hard pruning. Allow the tendrils to develop until July, then prune them. Pruning the branches and twigs and wiring the branch structure can be done after the leaves have dropped. Keep the short stems, on which the flower buds are located, intact. The flower buds and leaf buds can be distinguished at close range. You can thin out the leaves if the canopy becomes too dense in the summer and the inner branches are suffering from a lack of light, but it is not advisable to completely defoliate the wisteria. As they consume a lot of the tree’s energy, don’t allow too many seed pods grow. Read on for more information on bonsai tree pruning.
