The medium-sized wirehaired vizsla is a sporting dog breed from Hungary with a short, wiry coat and larger eyebrows and beard. Because of its thick, protective coat, it is a near relative of the smooth-coat vizsla but is a little tougher. These canines are typically playful, kind, and skilled athletes. They feel at ease both on land and in the sea.
Care as a Pet/ In Captivity
The daily exercise and mental stimulation requirements for wirehaired vizslas are high, while their grooming requirements are low. They also need education and socializing beginning at a young age.
Exercise
These energetic canines need at least one to two hours of exercise every day. And they would prefer to be active with their humans rather than just being turned loose in a gated area. They enjoy swimming, running, hiking, and long hikes. Dog activities like agility and dock diving are also great for pushing their physical and emotional limits.
When you’re out and about, always keep your dog leashed or in a safe enclosure. This breed has a high hunting drive and, if unchecked, would bolt after what it perceives to be prey.
Grooming
A wirehaired vizsla’s wiry coat doesn’t shed much and doesn’t get dirty quickly. Depending on how dirty your dog gets, budget for a bath per month. Additionally, every week or so, brush the coat with a grooming tool or mitt to remove pet hair. Plan to strip the coat once or twice a year to get rid of the dead fur.
Once a month or so, check your dog’s nails to see if they need to be trimmed. And strive to regularly brush its teeth. Additionally, check the animal’s ears at least once a week, especially after swimming, for any anomalies like wax accumulation or foreign objects. Ensure that you thoroughly dry your ears after swimming.
Nutrition and Diet
Make sure your dog has access to clean water at all times. And feed your dog a high-quality, nutritionally-balanced meal. Two measured meals per day are typical. However, go over the kind of diet and the quantity with your vet. A more nutrient-dense diet is frequently necessary for energetic canines like the wirehaired vizsla. To avoid overeating, you must still be careful of snacks and other excess food.
