Characteristics and Genetics

Vietnamese Potbellied Horse is a classic breed in Vietnam. It is believed to have started in Vietnam’s Nam Nh province, near the Red River Delta. It was widely distributed in Nam nh province, the neighbouring provinces of Hà Nam, Ninh Bnh, and Thái Bnh, as well as in the province of Thanh Hóa immediately to the south, in the North Central Coast region, where it was the predominant native pig breed in the majority of the delta’s provinces.

The strong Vietnamese Potbellied has good parasite and disease resistance. It is typically extensively reared and does well foraging on the rice straw and aquatic plants of its native region. Its plantigrade feet, which bear weight evenly across all four toes of each foot, make it particularly well suited to the marshy and muddy ground on which it typically lives.
