Venus Flytrap

venus-flytrap.

A Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) may appear to be from another planet upon first glance. When an insect lands on the alluring pink center and the trap closes around the victim, that’s utterly out of this world. Their tiny bifold jaws with spiky fringed “teeth” look nearly otherworldly. By cultivating these interesting carnivorous plants indoors or, in some regions, outdoors, you may bring them into your home.

Light

Venus flytraps thrive in environments with at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Keep flytraps 4 to 7 inches away from fluorescent lights when they are being cultivated indoors under artificial lighting. More light should be provided if your plant’s traps lack a pink interior or the leaves appear long and spindly.

Soil and Water

Venus flytrap grows well in sluggish, acidic soil that retains moisture but yet has adequate drainage. Do not use standard potting soil because some of it may have fertilizers added. The optimal drainage and moisture retention come from a mixture of 1/3 sand and 2/3 sphagnum peat moss.

Continually mist the soil. One way to achieve this is to put the pot of your flytrap in a saucer or tray of water that is kept at a depth of about an inch. Never give your plants water straight from the faucet since it is typically overly alkaline or may contain too many minerals. Alternatively, use distilled water or rainwater.

Temperature and Humidity

Venus flytrap may survive in temperatures as low as 40°F in the winter with protection, although it prefers temperatures between 70 and 95°F. Keep the environment damp for the optimum Venus flytrap maintenance. Turn on a fan in the room where you store your Venus flytrap plants because proper air circulation is essential for their growth.

Fertilizer

Never use fertilizer or lime in the soil of Venus flytrap plants. These plants obtain the essential nutrients from their prey.
