Vasa Parrot

Vasa Parrot

Description

Life span: Up to 30 years

The Vasa Parrot is a medium-sized gray parrot that was born in Madagascar. The African Grey and the Vasa Parrot are both gray parrots, about the same size, but the Vasa Parrot has a very different body type. The Vasa Parrot’s exceptionally long neck, diminutive head, long legs, long feet, and long rectangular tail have led to the phrase “so ugly it’s cute” being used to describe it. But individual perceptions of beauty vary, and the Vasa Parrot offers benefits beyond its attractive appearance. Even though it has a less than stunning coloration compared to other parrots and a rather odd appearance, this gentle bird makes a superb pet due to its exceptional disposition.

Habitat/Native Region

The Psittacidae bird family includes the dark-gray Vasa Parrot. The Greater Vasa Parrot and the Lesser Vasa Parrot are the two species of Vasa Parrot. The Lesser Vasa Parrot is sometimes known as the black parrot. Madagascar and the Comoros, two island nations off the eastern coast of Africa, are home to both Vasa Parrot species. The Greater Vasa Parrot prefers dry forest areas, whereas the Lesser Vasa Parrot prefers humid forest areas. The two species have different habitat requirements.

Behavior

Vasa Parrots are family-friendly, affectionate birds who get along with everyone in the house, as opposed to being solitary birds. Vasa Parrots are lively, intelligent, and amusing birds. Female Vasa Parrots may exhibit moodiness, aggression, or territorial behavior during the breeding season. As much as possible, a Vasa Parrot should be allowed to play and engage with its human family. Like most other parrots, Vasa Parrots need a lot of owner’s time and attention to be content. Never leave a Vasa Parrot alone for an extended period of time.

Care

The Vasa Parrot requires a sizable enclosure. A Vasa Parrot would be best housed in an aviary, flight cage, or very sizable parrot cage, such as one made for a Macaw. Include plenty of perches in all sizes as well as a nesting box big enough for Vasa Parrot. Position of cage such that half of it is in the sun and half is in the shade because Vasa Parrots love to sunbathe.
