Characteristics and Genetics
These unusual-looking sheep, which are native to the Swiss Alps of the Valais French or Wallis regions, have curly forelocks, black faces, ears, and knees and hocks that are speckled. There is proof that this breed dates back to the fifteenth century. The initial Upper Valais Sheep Breeders Association was established in 1948, but it wasn’t until 1962 that the breed was officially recognized as a breed and enrolled in the Swiss Sheep Breeders Association in 1964.
Uses
This breed of sheep serves two distinct purposes. It’s grown for both meat and fiber.
