Physical characteristics and behavior

The small threadfin butterflyfish have vivid colors. Juveniles exhibit the same patterns as adults, but adults have a long filament sticking out of their dorsal fin.

Keeping as Pet

Threadfin-Butterflyfish

  • Care of Aquariums

Once adapted, this fish can be kept in the aquarium with no extra care or maintenance. It is not required to replace the water frequently; standard water changes of 10% every two weeks or 20% every month are OK. Large-scale sudden water changes might be problematic.

Water Changes: 10% biweekly or 20% monthly; avoid abrupt, significant water changes.

  • Setup of an Aquarium

To accommodate their size and to swim, these fish require a lot of room. A 100 gallon tank is the minimum recommended size because they can grow to a whopping 9 inches in length. The tank should be well-decorated with tonnes of rocks that provide a variety of hiding spots and tonnes of debris. They also require a lot of open space where they can swim. This fish nibbles on the polyps of kinds of hard stony coral. Most other invertebrates it encounters will similarly be torn apart by it. Therefore, it is not suggested for reefs with a lot of coral.

  • 100 gal. minimum tank size (379 L)
  • Appropriate for Nano tank: No Live Rock, Tank Normative Plus Hiding Places is a requirement.
  • Type of Substrate: Sand and Coral Mixed
  • Lighting needs: Moderate – typical lighting. It should be kept in moderately bright light, but it can also be kept in extremely strong light as long as some softly lit areas are supplied.
  • Temperature: 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit (22.2 to 27.8 degrees Celsius)
  • Specific gravity: between 1.020 and 1.025
  • pH: 8.1 to 8.4
  • Brackish: No
  • Water Movement: Weak – Water movement plays a small role in the process. Although a moderately strong flow can be tolerated, slowly moving water is preferred.
  • Water Type: All – It is a free swimmer and frequently spends time in the open ocean.
