Characteristics and Genetics

The Tamworth, often referred to as Sandy Back and Tam, is a breed of domestic pig that was developed in Tamworth, Staffordshire, in the United Kingdom, which bears its name. It is one of the oldest pig breeds, but like many other older livestock breeds, it is not well suited to contemporary production techniques and is listed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust as  “threatened” in the United States and “vulnerable” in the UK because there are only less than 300 registered breeding females left.

The Tamworth is a breed that is thought to be fairly genetically distinct from the majority of contemporary commercial pigs, making it a great candidate for crossbreeding. Because of its capacity to attain great body bulk without having much actual fat, it is occasionally referred to as a “bacon pig.”
