Physical characteristics and behavior

Fish like the Starry Blenny, or Salarias ramosus, are excellent algae consumers. The Starry Blenny’s body is mostly dark brown in color with several tiny spots of a lighter hue all around it. They have a back covered in a few white spots, a dark brown body covered in countless tiny pearly dots, and white frills on top of their heads.

  • Ideal tank conditions

The Starry Blenny is not a little saltwater fish, growing to a size of 5 to 6 inches when fully grown, but they are also not open-water swimmers, preferring to perch or feed on algae films rather than swimming around the tank. As a result, the perfect aquarium for them contains a natural coating of algae and a good number of live rock or other structures for perching and hiding.

  • Smallest tank size

They can be kept in tanks as small as 30 gallons, but a tank that size would likely include them as a prominent participant.

  • Water Conditions

Water with a specific gravity of 1.023 and 1.025, a pH range of 8.0 to 8.4, and a temperature between 70.0 and 82.0 degrees Fahrenheit (21.1 and 27.8 degrees C) constitute their optimum environment.

  • Temperament

Observing the Snowflake Blenny in action is a delight. They enjoy perching on the living rock and hopping and skipping while chowing down on algae or algal films. Sometimes they will dive torpedo-style head first and then go to a different area of the tank.

  • Diet

The ideal tank for a Starry Blenny also has a natural population of algae that can be supplemented with diets for aquarium fish that contain algae.

The Starry Blenny is a herbivore that relies on algae for nutrition. If you’re feeding your other fish brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, etc., it may accept an easy meaty meal once adapted to your tank, but you must make sure they also consume sufficient algae in order to meet their nutritional needs.
