Physical Attributes 

A small, muscular horse with a thick mane and tail and delicately feathered legs is known as a Russian Heavy Draft Horse. The breed can be identified by its relatively short legs in comparison to its body length, a conformation that offers great traction, particularly when pulling weight. The neck has a thick, well-cropped neck.

Characteristics and Genetics 

Russian heavy draught horses are known as the Soviet Heavy Draft. It is descended from the heavy draught Belgian Brabant breed. In 1952, it was acknowledged as a breed. It was created in the former Soviet Union for agricultural drought labor. . One of several heavy draught breeds created in the Soviet Union in the 20th century, the others being the Russian Heavy Draft and the Vladimir Heavy Draft, all of which were mostly descended from the Clydesdale. Crossbred with mares of diverse types, some of whom were of the Ardennais, Jutland, Percheron, or Suffolk Punch draught type and others of which were riding horses, were imported Brabant draught stallions from Belgium. Later, breeding was moved to the Pochinki Stud Farm in Pochinki, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, with other breeding facilities at Gavrilov Posad, Ivanovo Oblast, and Mordovia.

The Soviet Heavy Draft is a substantially developed horse with free-moving gaits as a result of selective breeding. It features a short neck and a straight or convex profile. With a broad, robust back and a muscularly sloping croup, the torso is wide and muscular. There is a rounded abdomen. The legs are small, strong, and have round hooves and firm joints.

Various sorts of mares, including Ardennais, Jutland, Percheron, Suffolk Punch, and certain riding horses, were crossed with Brabant stallions.

Uses

The Soviet Heavy Draft was developed for industrial and agricultural drought labor. Additionally, it is employed in the creation of milk and meat. Fecundity in mares ranges from 65-75%, and when weaned, foals weigh between 350 and 400 kg. The largest milk production per lactation on record is 6,320 kg: 325

In the latter half of the 20th century, it was one of the breeds utilized in the development of the Bulgarian Heavy Draft.

Interesting Fact

With the greatest documented milk supply per lactation being roughly 6320 kg, the mares have a high lactation level.
