Characteristics and Genetics

In the 1930s, the South Suffolk made its debut in New Zealand in response to the need for leaner meat from other countries. It is a New Zealand breed that was created in Canterbury by a breeder for the Southdown stud. In 1955, the South Suffolk was recognized as a breed and is being utilized more frequently as a terminal sire for top-quality lamb production.
