Song Canary

Song Canary

Description

Life span: Up to 10 years

Bright yellow, brown, gray, white, and variegated are just a few of the colors that canaries can have. Since the 16th century, maybe earlier, they have been a well-liked pet in Europe. They are Canary Islands natives. The canary may be the companion bird that has been domesticated the most in modern times. It has never existed in its captive form in the wild. The only distinguishing feature of the wild canary, a little, greenish finch-like bird, is its song. Similar to how many dog breeds were developed, the colors, forms, and songs that are presently widespread in canaries are completely the result of deliberate selective breeding for favorable features.

 Habitat/Native Region

The Canary Islands, where it was born, inspired the name of the bird. Europeans started importing the canary’s songs in the late 1500s after falling in love with them. Eventually, Europeans started breeding these birds and taking advantage of little mutations, leading to the development of canary breeds that today hardly resemble one another and surely have nothing in common with their formerly wild ancestors.

As Pet

Behavior

The canaries are easier to care for and require less time than many companion birds, but this delicate bird needs a few minutes of daily attention to keep healthy. Although hand-raised canaries are highly sociable and tame, most people do not keep them as pets. Although a person might be able to custom order one, it’s unlikely that person will discover a breeder who only raises these birds by hand.

Care

Although they prefer temperatures around 75 degrees, canaries are not sensitive birds and can become accustomed to cold weather in an outdoor aviary. They are sensitive to temperature changes, odors, and changes in the home environment if they have not been adequately acclimated.
