Smooth Fox Terriers are powerful, well-built, and graceful in their movements. The Smooth Fox Terrier’s short coat is primarily white with tan, black, or black and tan spots. Origin/History
The Smooth Fox Terrier was developed in England in the 1860s as a fox and vermin hunter. The breed swiftly became the most well-known member of the terrier family at the time due to its attractive appearance. The Old English Terrier, Bull Terrier, Smooth-Coated Black-and-Tan Terrier, Greyhound, and Beagle are all direct descendants of the Fox Terrier.
The Smooth Fox Terrier’s population in the United States rose after the 1930s before falling once more as more people relocated from rural to urban areas. The temperament and strong instincts of the breed made keeping Fox Terriers in cities challenging. The Smooth Fox Terrier and Wire Fox Terrier were regarded as one breed by the American Kennel Club for over a century. However, the two were recognized as separate breeds in 1984.
