Shikoku

shikoku

Japanese spitz dogs of medium size, known as Shikoku (also Kochi-Ken), have thick fur, pointed ears, and short, upward-curling tails. These canines were praised for their loyalty and were bred to hunt wild boars. Even in its native nation, Shikoku is uncommon, but in North America it is even more so.

Shikoku should all have recognizable markings. These white or light-colored patches, known as urajiro, can be found on the insides of the legs, beneath the jaw and neck, on the chest and belly, on the underside of the tail, on the sides of the nose, and on the cheeks and brows of the eyes.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

Shikoku dogs should be nurtured by knowledgeable people and require a lot of exercise, grooming, and training. It’s crucial that folks who adopt this breed are able and willing to invest a lot of time in their upkeep.

Exercise

A hunting dog with plenty of energy to burn, the Shikoku. This breed is especially well-suited to single owners who spend a lot of time outdoors, therefore owners must be committed to providing ample daily exercise and mental stimulation. Always keep your Shikoku on a leash or in a secure area, like in your backyard, when taking extended walks, hiking, or exploring. The Shikoku, which has been bred to hunt for decades, cannot be left unattended as it may chase dogs, cats, squirrels, or other animals while disobeying its owner’s commands to stop.

Grooming

The Shikoku’s short double coat doesn’t need to be trimmed because it is washed and worn. Winter warmth is provided by the undercoat, which is soft and dense underneath the harsh outer coat.

The seasonal shedding of the undercoat is known as the Shikoku “blows coat” every year in the spring. This is when the Shikoku sheds a lot. A de-shedding tool can speed up the process when used daily to brush and comb the hair. Every two weeks, trim your dog’s nails, and frequently check the ears to make sure they don’t appear red or inflamed. If the ears are filthy, clean them with cotton balls or squares of gauze and an ear cleaner appropriate for pets.

Nutrition and Diet

Shikoku, like all dog breeds, should consume high-quality dog food in the right amounts to prevent weight gain. Hip dysplasia, knee dysplasia, and arthritis are just a few examples of the joint diseases that can be brought on by being overweight. Diabetes is one of the significant health issues that obesity can cause. To choose a balanced diet and quantity size for your dog, speak with your veterinarian about their unique requirements.
