Shadow Catfish

Shadow catfish.

Size

The average adult’s height is 1.8 inches (4.6 cm) The normal size of a purchased item is between one and eight inches (2.5 – 4.6 cm).

Physical Characteristics and Behavior

This genus’s members can be distinguished by their microscopic size, translucence, and constant black stripe along the length of their bodies. Only the anterior margin of the pectoral spine of the sole species imported for the aquarium trade, Hyalobagrus flavus, is serrated, making it simple to distinguish it from its close relatives. Males are often leaner and have longer genital papillae. A pregnant woman’s mature ova are visible through the translucency of her body and appear green in hue.

Keeping and Care as Pet

Shadow catfish

  • Water Conditions

It thrives in calm, slightly acidic water. Fish prefer certain water characteristics: 70-79 degrees Fahrenheit (21-26 degrees Celsius), a pH of 5.5-7.0, and a salinity of 0–3 parts per million are the required conditions. 5–12 on the scale of hardness.

  • Aquarium Size

40 litre aquarium, 18″ x 12″ x 12″ (45 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm).

  • Maintenance

It performs best in soft, acidic water. Try planting the tank very heavily in some sections, while allowing some open regions for swimming. The fish are more outgoing if they are given some cover. It’s also a good idea to add some floating flora to soften the brightness. Driftwood and smooth rocks are possible additions to the design. There shouldn’t be much water movement. Since it is susceptible to declining water quality, effective filtration and a consistent maintenance schedule are crucial.

  • Diet

Small, frozen, live meals like bloodworms, brine, shrimp, daphnia, and other similar organisms should form the foundation of the diet. Although fish will typically tolerate dried meals, if fed primarily on them, they won’t grow to their greatest condition.

  • Temperament and Compatibility

A very calm and social tiny catfish that thrives in a shoal of at least six other fish. Since tank mates are completely disregarded, it is appropriate for the majority of calm, small- to medium-sized species groups. Rasboras, danios, and little loaches are advised tank mates.
