Description

Size: Males typically weigh 4–6 kg, and females weigh 2.7–4 kg.

Scottish Straights are a medium-sized breed of cat that have a rounded exterior. Throughout their entire lives, they maintain a cute, kitten-like attitude. Both shorthair and longhair variants of Scottish straights are available. Longhairs have complete coats with noticeable britches, tail plumes, toe tufts, and ear decorations whereas shorthairs have dense, velvety hair that stands away from the body. Their coats come in almost every colour and pattern imaginable. Scottish Straights feature large, short noses, huge, lovely eyes, and rounder heads. Their small to medium-sized ears have rounded tips. They also have spherical, well-padded bodies and flexible, tapering medium- to long tails.

Origin and History

Along with the Scottish Fold, the Scottish Straight is a member of the Scottish breed category. Scottish Straights and Scottish Folds are the same breeds, with the exception of Scottish Straights’ straight, erect ears, which appear in both longhair and shorthair types.

A white farm cat named Susie is the ancestor of Scottish Straights. In 1961, Susie was seen by shepherd William Ross at a farm in Scotland. Ross asked the farmer whether he may take one of Susie’s kittens after being struck by the way her ears folded down on her head (a uncommon mutation’s outcome).

Ross next crossed a kitten from that litter with a white British Shorthair after breeding the folded-ear kitten with a red tabby. Five cats were produced as a result, and these five cats’ folded ears established the Scottish Fold breed. The remainder developed into their own breed, the Scottish Straight, and were born with normal ears.

Behavior

Activity Level: Medium

The Scottish Straight is a wise, devoted, and inquisitive companion. They are sometimes referred to as “four on the floor” cats since they would to be nearby with all four paws on the ground than scooped up and carried around. A Scottish Straight cat will follow you from room to room and may even pick up tricks like fetching or opening cabinet doors! Therefore, you might like a Scottish Straight if you’re looking for an extremely gorgeous plush cat with lovely round eyes and a playful spirit!

Grooming

The coats of shorthair straights require little upkeep. To keep them looking their best, they only need to be brushed once a week using a steel comb to remove any loose fur. A few times a week brushing is required for longhair straights in order to prevent mats and tangles.

To keep their nails from becoming too long, most cats need to have their nails clipped every month. Long nails are more prone to snag and tear or damage when they do. They may even develop inside of your cat’s paw pads, which could cause pain or an infection. In addition to nail trimming, giving your cat a scratching post will enable them to take care of some nail upkeep on their own (due to their innate desire to scratch).

There can be no grooming regimen without a little dental hygiene. Brush your cat’s teeth every day and arrange appointments with your veterinarian for expert dental cleanings and exams to promote your cat’s general health.

Diet and Nutrition

These cats need to eat healthy food. Choose a formula that is age-appropriate for your pet because the nutritional requirements for kittens, adults, and elderly cats differ.

In the US, about one out of every three cats is overweight or obese. Additionally, those extra pounds can increase the chance of developing conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. Measure out your meals and, if required, cut back on the portions to keep calories in mind. Also, remember to factor in treats. They should, on average, comprise no more than 10% of the calories consumed by cats.

Finally, all cats require constant access to fresh, clean water.
