Schwartz’s Catfish

Schwartz's catfish

Size

This species has the potential to grow to a length of 1.5 inches (3.9 centimeters).

Physical Characteristics and Behavior

Living in Rio Purs, a Brazilian Amazon tributary, is Cory Schwartz. This delicate species should be kept in groups of five or more due to shoaling. It might be vulnerable to erosion or barbel infections. In order to keep the fish alive on a soft sand substrate, it is crucial to preserve these delicate sensory organs (rather than gravel, where waste can pile up undetected). For the fish to remain healthy, regular care is required, including partial water changes. Boulders, heavy vegetation, and driftwood may offer shade.

Tetras, rasboras, and other peaceful fish species make excellent tankmates and will entice the Corydoras to emerge more frequently. Since corydoras breathe air through their intestines, a tiny gap between the water’s surface and the cover slides allows fish to rise to the surface and breathe. This may occur every day. Parallelus resembles Schwartzi. They are different in that C. schwartzi lacks an orange patch on its head whereas C. parallelus does. Contrary to C. schwartzi, C. parallelus lacks a black spot on the first dorsal fin ray.

Care and Keeping as Pet

Schwartz's catfish.

  • Water Conditions

To thrive, it needs a tropical climate with water that is between 22 and 26 degrees Celsius, 6.0 and 8.0 on the pH scale, and 2 to 25 dGH on the hardness scale. It consumes a variety of foods, including benthic crustaceans, insects, worms, and plant debris.

  • Compatibility with tanks mates

Very calm neighbourhood fish. They won’t purposely bother the fish in the aquarium, but their fumbling around the tank could annoy more delicate fish or other bottom dwellers. It’s better to keep them in groups of 5 or more.

  • Tank Setup

Enjoys a planted tank and needs a substrate of sand or tiny pebbles. When a cory’s barbels become damaged from being kept on sharp or big stones, it will be difficult for it to find food.

As with other scaleless fish, corys are sensitive to salt, therefore introducing salt to the aquarium will hurt them. Minimum 10 gallon aquarium size.

  • Diet

These fish will consume most food that sinks to the bottom of the tank. Flake food or other sinking meals, such as catfish pellets, should be added to sinking algal pellets as a supplement.

You should be aware that these fish have a carnivorous side and enjoy eating things like bloodworm and brine shrimp. Foods made of vegetables don’t provide much nutrients for them. Injured, dead, or even dying fish that remain on the substrate for an extended period of time will also be eaten. They are quite opportunistic! Since these fish are most active at night, one feeding just before darkness falls is usually plenty. Nevertheless, it is simple to get them to eat during the day. Due to their sluggish eating habits, they should be given at least 30 minutes to finish their meal.
