Schapendoes

schapendoes

The medium-sized Dutch herding dog breed known as the schapendoes, or Dutch sheepdog, has a long, thick, somewhat wavy double coat that can be any number of colors. The dog is well-balanced and lightweight overall. Behind the shaggy fur on its face, which also develops into a mustache and beard, are its huge, wide eyes. Additionally, although being very little, its downward-facing ears are feathered. The dog’s lengthy tail is heavily feathered as well. Because of its bouncy motions, the breed works well as a herding dog. And it thrives when the owner is interested.

Exercise

To keep your schapendoes happy and healthy, try to give it at least two hours of activity every day. The best hobbies include taking long strolls, running, cycling, trekking, and intense games of fetch. This breed can also succeed in dog sports like agility and herding competitions, which will assist to mentally and physically challenge it. It’s crucial to give this energetic breed ample time because some dogs that don’t get enough exercise may become excessively noisy or destructive inside the home.

Nutrition and Diet

Keep clean water on hand at all times for your dog. Additionally, give your schapendoes a high-quality, nutritionally balanced dog diet. Two measured meals should be given twice daily to make sure your dog is receiving the appropriate amount. As dietary requirements might vary depending on a person’s age, activity level, and other characteristics, it is important to discuss both the type of food and the quantity with your veterinarian.

Grooming

Brushing your dog at least once or twice a week will help to remove loose fur and avoid mats and tangles. The thick coat of this breed is prone to matting, especially where there is feathering. Therefore, meticulous grooming is essential. As the seasons change, you should anticipate periods of increased shedding as well. During these times, you’ll probably need to brush your dog more regularly to keep up with the loose fur.

Depending on how dirty it becomes, wash your schapendoes around once a month. However, check to see if it requires weekly cleaning of its ears. Additionally, try to brush its teeth every day and determine whether it needs its nails cut around once a month.
