One of the oldest dog breeds in the world, the Saluki is a medium-sized canine that is renowned for its long tail, feathered ears, and rugged, muscular body developed for speed and stamina. This breed has been the hunting hound of kings for thousands of years, and even in modern times, these dogs are still quick, nimble sprinters who like a good chase or romp outdoors. However, they also make loving, devoted pets with warm, trusting eyes and an unwavering commitment to their people.
Care as a Pet/ In Captivity
Due to its great need for exercise, the Saluki dog breed will not thrive in an apartment or without frequent walks (or runs) and outside time. This breed needs a firm leash, a watchful owner, and safe, confined outside areas to wander because of its speed and predisposition to chase and hunt deer, squirrels, or any other wildlife.
Exercise
This breed is a great pet for runners or busy families because it has a lengthy history as a running and tracking animal. For the Saluki’s physical and mental health, it will need two hours each day of exercise and walks.
For their safety, salukis should preferably reside in a house with a sizable yard that is fenced in. Salukis are notorious for being skilled at either eluding capture or turning destructive without the right exercise and stimulation (a lot of playtime and enough safe toys and bones to chew).
Grooming
Salukis can have either a feathered or smooth coat, and regardless of the coat type, weekly brushing is still necessary even though they shed less than other breeds. The breed is renowned for being a tidy dog that doesn’t have many common canine scents and only needs to be bathed occasionally. Owners of salukis should be careful to keep the dog’s long ears and tail clean. Try to keep the dog’s ears outside of the bowl while it is eating, and after a romp, look for any sticky or lingering dirt on the tip of the tail.
Nutrition and Diet
Any premium complete and balanced dog food ought to work well for the Saluki. Since this breed’s appetite varies significantly from dog to dog and some Salukis are known to be picky eaters, owners of Salukis with high appetites should be careful not to overfeed their pets in order to avoid weight gain and related problems. This huge, active breed needs to always have access to fresh water.
