Characteristics And Genetics
Ryelands are a tiny to medium-sized, white-faced, polled (no horns), down-type breed whose ancestors were created by monks at Leominster in the Herefordshire region of England’s rye-growing region in the 15th century. In 1903, the Ryeland breed initially arrived in New Zealand, then moved on to Australia. The breed, which was initially employed as a dual-purpose sheep, was eventually mostly used as a terminal sire.
