Russian Rat Snake

russian-rat-snake

Description:

Scientific name: Elaphe schrenckii

Life span: Up to 15 years

These snakes range in size from quite short to average. Adults often have cross bands of cream or yellow color on dark brown or black bodies. The only significant variation between their markings and those of eastern king snakes is the vivid yellow coloration that typically covers the adult snakes’ faces. The Russian rat snakes have an attractive contrast in color between the lower and top labial scales.

Native Region/Habitat

Large portions of the Far East, including Russia, China, Mongolia, and Korea, are home to the Russian rat snake (Elaphe schrenckii). Terrarium keepers and greenhouse growers love this species in many other nations, including the Netherlands.

Behavior:

Calm, docile, curious, suitable for novices. Despite having larger heads, Russian rat snakes may nevertheless prefer smaller meals. They consume a lot of food. They also enjoy climbing. They frequently make use of the opportunity to climb the branches inside their enclosure. Your pet’s tank must therefore be 24 inches or taller.

Adults may reach a height of 5 feet or more. Like corn snakes, they have heavy bodies as well. The placid nature of these snakes belies their strength and curiosities. It can be a little difficult to open and clean their enclosure.

Care As a pet/In captivity:

Make sure your pet’s enclosure is impenetrable to escape. Keep in mind that Russian rat snakes are powerful even as eggs. An enclosure that is 5 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet high may house a pair of adult snakes. However, it would be fantastic if you could provide them with a bigger enclosure.

The cold area should maintain a temperature of 70 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 28 degrees Celsius). The temperature must be 28 degrees Celsius, or 82 degrees Fahrenheit, for the warm side. Both sides of the enclosure must maintain the right temperature because it greatly aids the snakes in properly digesting their food.

In addition to water, humidity is important. Every few days, water the entire cage. This will be of great assistance. Maintain a higher humidity level inside the cage so that your pet can shed its skin more quickly.

These foods are available frozen or thawed for your pet’s consumption. While they can grow quickly, hatchlings should eat once every three to four days. Every two weeks, adults should eat. They are fine with two mature mice or one medium-sized rat.
