Reeves Turtle

Reeves Turtle

The Chinese Pond turtle, sometimes known as the Reeves turtle after English naturalist John Reeves, is found in eastern Asian countries such as China, Korea, and Japan.

Care as a Pet

This semi-aquatic species loves ponds and marshes with slow currents and frequently muddy bottoms.

Housing

Turtle tanks are required as the containment for Reeves turtles. This is due to the fact that they will require entirely submerged parts free from warping or leaking issues. The reeves turtle can reach a maximum length of 100mm (4.5″) and requires an appropriate amount of space to live peacefully. Due to this, we advise using a tank that is at least 600mm wide.

We advise a minimum tank height of about 300mm because the tank must also be tall enough to allow spaces for the turtle to swim. To give the turtle a place to exit the water and relax, a ramp and dock should be used.

Heat

The peninsular turtle will occasionally travel to the basking area throughout the day. This enables the turtle to warm up, dry off, soak up UVB, and rest. A decent basking location should be approximately 80 degrees Fahrenheit and have enough UV. For all turtles, more UVB lighting is necessary. UVB light is necessary for Reeves turtles to synthesize vitamin D. Reeves turtles have issues with bone growth because they cannot adequately metabolize calcium without vitamin D, especially D3.

Feed

A variety of aquatic meals, meat products, and live food are all consumed by reeves turtles. When fresh or live foods are not a possibility, they can instead be fed dry foods. Instead of using plant protein, the dry food should be made using shrimp or beef protein.

However, you can also use black crickets, dubia cockroaches, or locusts. We’ve discovered that brown crickets are the most widely accepted (hoppers). For the meat component of the turtles’ diet, you can also feed them shrimp, salmon, mice, and chicks.
