Redwood Tree

red-wood-tree.

It has horizontal to slightly drooping branches and a conical crown. Amazingly, the trunk is straight. The bark can be extremely soft and fibrous, up to 30 cm (1 ft) thick, and quite red-brown in colour when initially exposed (thus the name redwood), turning darker with age.

Light

The coast redwoods cannot tolerate shade and need direct sunlight.

Soil

The well-drained, sandy loam, acidic soil found in its natural habitat is preferred by coast redwoods. Although these redwoods can adapt to other soil types, compacted, alkaline, or saline soil are not acceptable.

Water

Maintaining adequate watering on your coast redwood is essential for a contented, healthy tree. In its original environment, the naturally occurring fog generates a mist that irrigates the tree in the woodlands, continuously satisfying moisture requirements. In a residential location, you won’t have this natural irrigation, therefore you must continue to water your tree until it is well-established. For the first five years of the tree’s life, water it once a week out to the dripline, where the shallow and vast fibrous roots will absorb the most water.

Temperature and Humidity

Climates with high precipitation and temperatures between 15 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit are preferred by coast redwoods. The natural range of the tree experiences constant wetness from the mountain and coastal weather systems, with an average temperature of 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fertilizer

Your tree should survive and even thrive without any additional nutrients or fertilizers. One thing to keep an eye out for is yellowing needles in the summer, which could be brought on by neutral or alkaline soil. The ideal soil pH for redwoods is acidic, at 6.5. A higher soil pH can interfere with a tree’s capacity to absorb iron, which causes yellowing of the needles. It is best to measure the pH level of the soil if you see yellowing.
