Description

Unnoticeable yellow-green blooms grow in pendulous racemes that are 4 to 8 centimetres long. The flowers mature into bright red translucent edible berries that have an 8 to 12 mm diameter and 3 to 10 berries per raceme. From mid- to late summer, an established bush can produce 3–4 kg of berries.

Varieties

Red Lake’ is a popular cultivar with large, flavorful, juicy berries. It is susceptible to mildew and Popular cultivar Red Lake has big, delicious, juicy berries. It does not withstand late-spring frosts and is mildew-prone.

A Dutch variety called “Jonkheer van Tets” is a prolific fruit producer that blooms early and is mildew resistant.

Medium-sized fruit and a compact habit characterize the shrub “Stanza,” whose crop output occurs in the middle to late seasons.

The cultivar “Rovada,” which commercial farmers favor, yields a lot of big berries. It has a high level of resistance to powdery mildew but is vulnerable to cane blight.

Uses

While they are sour, they are often less acidic than gooseberries, allowing you to consume them raw. You can sprinkle them on your morning yoghurt or simply take a handful of them. But when cooked, they do become incredibly sweet and juicy. Remove the stems, replace other berries with them in the muffin batter, or use them to make jam.

Cultivation

Although they can be grown in partial shade, such as up against a north-facing wall, the fruit will ripen a little later and be less sweet. They love full sun. Pick a location that is protected from high winds and stay away from areas that are susceptible to late frosts, which can harm the blossoms and produce fewer fruits.
