Characteristics and Genetics

American cattle of the Randall Lineback or Randall breed. It is highly endangered and was discovered near Sunderland, Vermont. After Everett Randall passed away, a couple in Massachusetts purchased the Randall cattle with the intention of selling them for a profit rather than keeping them. To save the genetics from extinction, Cynthia Creech, who was living in Tennessee at the time, stepped in and bought the majority of the remaining animals, including five cows, four heifers, two yearling bulls, a weanling bull, two further calves, and a herd bull. Since Randall Cattle are an all-purpose breed, its historical uses included dairy, meat, and draught work. The breed’s population has grown from less than 20 animals to over 350 breeding females.

Population, Distribution & Habitat

The Randall cattle are regarded as highly endangered because they are one of just two landrace breeds that are still present in the United States. Despite the fact that these cattle are not as well-known as others developed to produce more meat and milk, many individuals want to conserve the breed, including the 2005-founded Randall Lineback Breed Association.

There are just 200 breeders of Randall cattle in the United States, and the majority of them are small, subsistence farmers and homesteads. The population has now increased from the original 22 cows from Everett Randall’s farm, but they remain the rarest breed of cattle in the United States.

Uses

Due to their heritage as landrace cattle, Randall cattle aren’t the most lucrative agricultural animals available, unlike the majority of modern cattle breeds. Randall cattle produce significantly less meat and dairy than other varieties. They thrive on small farms and homesteads but are unwelcome on large ranches due to their inferior performance to contemporary breeds.
