Rainbow Lory

Rainbow Lory

Description

Life span: up to 30 years

Green feathers cover the heads, wings, and bellies of rainbow lorikeets, while bright blue feathers cover the cheeks and belly. Their breasts have a striking crimson color with yellow and orange side embellishments. Their striking red beaks stand out against the blue of their facial feathers, which contrast with their feet’s deep, grayish-black skin. It is impossible to tell a male from a female by appearance. Juveniles have a black beak, which gradually turns orange as they get older.

Habitat/Native Region

Eastern Indonesia and Australia both have indigenous rainbow lories. In the bush, the rainforest, and the woodlands, the rainbow lorikeet lives in trees. Rainbow lorikeets can fly up to 40 kilometers each day in search of food. A dozen or more birds flying together in a noisy flock is not uncommon.

Care

Rainbow lorikeets are great pets for anyone with lots of free time to dedicate to them. To keep their wits and beaks busy, rainbow lorikeets like playing and need a lot of toys. For these birds, a substantial flight cage or aviary is necessary. Use sturdy metal cages rather than wooden ones, which their beaks might break apart. Toys with jingles and rattles are highly beloved by lories. They have a tendency to get bored, therefore it’s important to switch up their toys at least once every week. Person can never have too many toys for a rainbow lory; in fact, each bird has to alternate between at least twenty different toys at once.
