Rainbow Eucalyptus

rainbow-eucalyptus.

The distinctive streaks of green, red, orange, grey, and purple that run up the trunk and branches when the tannin-filled bark peels gave the tall, evergreen rainbow eucalyptus tree (Eucalyptus deglupta) its name. The colors of the rainbow are typically not as noticeable outside of its natural tropical environment. Regardless, it is a stunning gum tree that, after the first year or two, may, depending on the location, produce little clusters of white flowers at various times of the year. Popular in locations like Hawaii, where the tropical climate is ideal for this species, it is frequently grown as a giant focal point tree for landscapes and can be seen giving shade along street borders.

Light

Plant rainbow eucalyptus trees where they will have access to unobstructed sunlight because they require a lot of it. The vibrant bark is particularly noticeable in bright environments.

Soil

This species grows in fertile, wet, well-drained deep sandy, loamy soils. It does better with neutral to slightly acidic pH levels (preferably 5.6 to 6.0) and does not enjoy high alkalinity in the soil.

Water

Rainbow eucalyptus trees need regular watering during their first year, despite the fact that they can withstand considerable drought once they are established. The trees cannot withstand extended flooding or waterlogging, however maintaining moisture will cause the bark and trunk to grow, resulting in more distinct colour stripes. Moisture can be retained by mulching the area around the tree, but avoid mulching the trunk directly.

Temperature and Humidity

High humidity and temperatures between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal for these plants’ growth. It should come as no surprise that rainbow eucalyptus trees cannot tolerate frost. Temperature, humidity, and ventilation all have a significant impact on how distinct the tannins in the tree bark will be in terms of colour.

Fertilizer

Your rainbow eucalyptus tree shouldn’t require feeding unless you put it in extremely barren soil. They dislike phosphorus, and you can slow down their infamously rapid growth rate without fertilizer.

Pruning

Unless you wish to shape your established rainbow eucalyptus tree, control its height, or keep a strong leader, trimming won’t be necessary frequently. As the tree ages, the leader becomes less dominant and the branches begin to taper at the ends, resulting in a flat, spreading crown. In the late winter or early spring, you can remove any branches that have damage or illness.
