Description

The head of the Rafeiro do Alentejo is enormously broad, with a rounded skull. His dark brown eyes, which are highly expressive, add to his outstanding appearance. He has small to medium-sized triangular ears with rounded tips that are of a triangular shape.

Origin/History

The Portuguese livestock guardian dog breed known as the Rafeiro do Alentejo. It has the name of its birthplace, the southern Portuguese region of Alentejo. It is acknowledged by the Clube Português de Canicultura, and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale formally accepted it in 1954.

Temperament

Care

Nutrition

The Rafeiro do Alentejo should thrive on a premium dog food, whether it is produced commercially or is made at home under the guidance and agreement of your veterinarian. Whatever the dog’s age (puppy, adult, or senior), the diet should be suitable. Watch your dog’s calorie intake and weight level because certain dogs are prone to obesity. Treats can be a valuable training tool, but offering them in excess might lead to obesity. Discover which foods fit the bill for canine consumption and which don’t. If you have any worries about your dog’s weight or diet, consult your veterinarian. Fresh water that is clean should always be accessible.

Exercise

Playtime in the backyard, preferably gated, or being taken for walks multiple times a day are two options for exercise. Exercise can also be obtained through indoor games like hide-and-seek, chasing a ball that has been rolled across the floor, or practising new moves. Some outdoor pursuits, like hiking or catching balls, might be a useful way to burn off energy. Even quick walks through the halls in your apartment can provide your dog with exercise, especially when it’s bad outside. Getting your dog ready for canine sports like agility, obedience, and rally can be a terrific way to get him or her moving.

Grooming

A bath every now and then will keep your Rafeiro do Alentejo clean and looking his best in addition to routine weekly maintenance. For you and your dog, grooming can be a great way to strengthen your relationship. With a nail clipper or grinder, the strong, quickly developing nails should be frequently cut to prevent overgrowth, splitting, and breaking. Regular ear examinations are necessary to prevent wax and debris buildup, which can lead to infection. Brushing teeth should be done often.
