Pumi

pumi

The Pumi is a medium-sized herding dog native to Hungary that is distinguished by its double coat’s distinctive corkscrew curls, curled tail, and lean, athletic build. The eye-catching fur of these lovely dogs makes them instantly recognizable as daring workers. Due to its propensity for gathering, driving, and controlling animals, the Pumi, a tiny sheepdog, was historically in charge of moving flocks on narrow roads between pastures in western Hungary.

The Pumi is now renowned for its extraordinary intellect and distinctive personality. The Pumi is a lovely family companion and a determined herding dog with endless energy for work and play thanks to its pleasant and friendly disposition, expressive ears, and facial character.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

Although the Pumi is a particularly trainable dog, it needs a lot of physical activity and mental stimulation to perform at its best. The curly double coat of this dog requires routine maintenance to stay in good condition, so owners should be ready for it.

Exercise

With at least an hour of exercise per day along with playtime, training sessions, or mental stimulation from sports like agility, your Pumi will thrive. The greatest homes for these playful dogs are those who can accommodate their inclinations to herd, as they still have a strong herding drive. For owners looking for a fun way to keep their dog active at home, simple games like fetch can be a great choice. Due to the Pumi’s agility and propensity to climb, a high fence surrounding the yard is essential (along with training for a reliable recall). Your Pumi will be delighted to accompany you on runs, hikes, bike rides, and other outdoor activities in addition to playing and training.

Grooming

A soft undercoat and a rougher, more outside coat makes up the Pumi’s double coat. Every three to six weeks, give your hair a light cut and brushing to help keep mats and tangles at bay. After combing, its coat needs to be wetted in order for its curls to re-form (and be sure to skip the blow dryer after baths). Although this dog’s coat is normally low-shedding, owners may notice more stray fur than usual throughout this process.

Nutrition and Diet

With premium commercial dog food or a home-prepared diet under a veterinarian’s supervision, the Pumi should function properly. This energetic, active breed needs constant access to fresh, clean water.

Check your Pumi’s calorie intake carefully because these dogs may become overweight if they don’t get the right portions and plenty of exercise (including healthy treats). Consult your vet to determine a suitable diet and portion size depending on the age, weight, and amount of activity of your particular dog.
