Puli

puli

The puli, a medium-sized herding dog, has long been popular in Hungary. Its name is pronounced “poo-lee.” In the world of dogs, the unusually dreadlocked puli stands out without a doubt. The dog’s corded coat has a tendency to grow long, so at some point the hair may touch the ground, concealing the legs and giving the puli the appearance of floating over the surface. The puli’s hair has a practical use: The dog was developed in Hungary as a sheep herder, and the thick, wooly, and corded coat shielded it from the elements and potential predators like wolves.

Depending on the dog and whether they were reared together, they may or may not get along with cats.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

More than training and exercise, grooming is arguably the toughest obstacle of owning a puli. If you possess a puli, you can decide whether to cord the coat, leave it out brushed or clipped, or none of the above. Because maintaining dreadlocks requires a lot of care, many pet pulis do not have cords.

Exercise

Pulis are active and vivacious people hidden beneath all that hair. To be happy, they require a lot of everyday physical activity and mental stimulation. Even though long walks—at least an hour each day—hikes, and fetch games can help, many puli owners also take part in competitive canine sports including herding, agility, fly ball, and obedience. Moreover, because it is a herding dog, it needs a sizable fenced-in yard to run around in and burn off all of its energy.

Grooming

The cords of a puli begin to develop spontaneously when a puppy is about nine months old. The coat needs your assistance as you separate the matting from the skin. You may direct the coat so it cords appropriately and doesn’t become one big mat with the assistance of your breeder or a groomer experienced in corded coats.

Bathing a corded puli requires patience and a unique approach because it takes a while to get the cords wet and remove all of the soap. The hardest part about drying is that it can take hours, exactly like it does to dry a wool sweater. Start by wringing out the cords starting at the ends, then use towels to wring out even more moisture.

Nutrition and Diet

Feed your puli only the best dog food available. Due to this breed’s propensity for certain genetic joint disorders, your breeder or veterinarian can advise you on the best food to feed it. It’s crucial to prevent your puli from gaining weight. Use a measuring cup or scale to feed scheduled meals to make sure your puli isn’t eating more than they require. Continuously filling the bowl with food can result in snacking and overeating.
