Characteristics and Genetics

Three well-known Dorset Horn stud masters who understood the benefits of removing the horns from this magnificent breed but were adamant about preserving all of its traits created the Poll Dorset breed in Australia. A purebred Corriedale ram and a purebred Ryeland ram were coupled with pure Dorset Horn ewes to begin the trials in 1937. The breed’s traits, including its quick growth rate, superb fleshing, and muscular development, make it the perfect choice for the meat industry. The lightweight Middle Eastern market, the local market, or the export market to the US can all be satisfied with lambs from Poll Dorsets weighing 20 to 25 kg or more.

Uses

The Polled Dorset sheep are a type of meat sheep. They are primarily farmed for the production of meat.

Special Statements

  • Polled Dorset sheep are tough and powerful creatures. They are known for having many births each year and are frequently utilized in crossbreeding to produce females for breeding outside of the normal breeding season.
  • Additionally, the ewes are very prolific. They are among the rare sheep breeds with this quality. The Polled Dorset sheep are excellent for commercial sheep farming and are also well-suited to confined spaces.
