Pionus Parrot

pionus-parrot.

Description

Lifespan: 25 years

Pionus parrots are typically up to 12 inches in length. They have a square tail like Amazon parrots, red feathers on their vent, and a fleshy, exposed eye ring that surrounds the entire eye. The bulky body, naked eye ring (which can vary in colour), and short square tail are traits of the genus.

Habitat/Native Region

Although each of the eight species has its distinct environment, pionus parrots are indigenous to Central and South America. They can be found in subtropical woods at high altitudes as well as tropical coastal forests.

Behavior

The Pionus parrot is a docile, slightly standoffish bird that is often gentle and loving. This parrot is thought to be quiet in comparison to other parrots. As a laid-back, affectionate bird that bonds well with its owner, the Pionus parrot is a suitable choice for a first bird owner. Although it rarely bites, this bird can get too attached to one individual and become violent against other family members.

These parrots make good pets for families with kids because they are less likely to bite than other parrots. Like other parrots, the manner a Pionus parrot is raised will determine whether you end up with a shy bird or a devoted and caring pet.

Care As Pet

Caging Requirements

The minimum dimensions for a Pionus parrot bird cage is 24 x 24 x 36 inches.  The ideal bar spacing is 3/4 inch, and a larger cage is even better.

It’s important to remember that Pionus, like all birds, may be filthy and poop frequently. So if you don’t want your birds to get sick, cleaning their cage must also be a regular part of your routine.

Grooming

In the wild, Pionus parrots love the rain, therefore hand-held showers with mild water are very enjoyable to them. Given that these birds’ beaks are longer than those of other parrots, we advise offering some mineral blocks to encourage beak grooming.  Make sure to trim or restrain their nails so they don’t grow too long.

You should also be aware that Pionus parrots molt multiple times a year to replace damaged feathers starting at the age of one year. So please keep their surroundings warm while this is happening.

Exercise

Due to their high level of activity, Pionus parrots need a lot of space to play and exercise every day. If you’re thinking of getting one of these birds, make sure you have the time in your schedule to give them at least 3 to 4 hours each day outside of the cage.
