Characteristics and Genetics

Domestic pigs of the Piétrain breed are from Belgium. It is a native of Wallonia and derives its name from the Walloon village of Piétrain in the northern Wallonian municipality of Jodoigne. It originally appeared around 1920, and in 1950 it was recognized as a breed. The farmers of Piétrain may have recognised a genetic trait that causes muscle hypertrophy and selectively bred for it, while its exact origins are unknown. More than most conventional breeds, pietrain crosses are stronger at converting feed. Additionally, they increase the vigor of the hybrid piglets, with positive health status and viability frequently recorded.
