Silver Fox Rabbit

silver fox rabbit

The silver fox rabbit is a rare but lovely breed of rabbit and is only the third to have been created in the United States. Due to its greater size and silver- and white-tipped fur, the silver fox was once known as the American heavyweight silver; yet, despite the name change, these rabbits continue to make robust, devoted pets.

Expected Lifespan: Usually 5-7 years, however they sometimes live up to 10 years.

Temperament and Behavior

Silver fox rabbits are excellent pets for children since they are gentle and big, and they are known to adore attention and have pleasant dispositions. They are a wonderful breed to exhibit because they are not little and timid but rather kind and tolerant.

Housing

When it comes to housing for your silver fox rabbit, you have many alternatives. You can construct or buy outdoor rabbit hutches, but they should be very safe to prevent your little bunny from escaping and predators from breaking in. Although indoor enclosures are also available, it is advised to offer your silver fox rabbit with a cage that is at least 4 feet by 4 feet along with a bunny-proofed play area in your house because rabbits require a lot of space to run around.

Eat and Drink

All rabbits, even silver fox rabbits, require fresh water in addition to a varied diet of vegetables and hay. Your rabbit should eat grass hays and dark, leafy green vegetables predominantly, with about 1/4 cup of rabbit pellets (without seeds or food coloring) supplied each day. Treats like sugar-free cereals, crackers, fruits, and non-green vegetables can only make up no more than 10% of their diet. To encourage your silver fox to drink enough water, keep a water bowl and bottle nearby at all times.

Exercise

Exercise is essential for the physical and mental well-being of any rabbit. To forage for food, stay mentally stimulated, locate things to chew on, maintain muscle development, and keep their digestive tracts working, silver fox rabbits require a lot of area to run around and play every day. Stress and immobility can both cause a decrease or cessation of gastrointestinal motility, so if you don’t exercise your silver fox rabbit, it’s likely to experience major health problems.

Purchase/Pricing

Because they are a rare breed, don’t expect to locate a silver fox rabbit in a pet shop or at a rescue center. If you want to buy a silver fox rabbit, you will probably need to locate a breeder at a rabbit show or online. Depending on the colour and exhibit quality of the rabbit, be prepared to pay anywhere from $50 to more than $100.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of Owning a Silver Fox Rabbit

While they are also incredibly sociable pets, rabbits require a lot more space and care than most people realize. Silver fox rabbits are simple to handle and to play with, but they do need daily access to fresh vegetables, as well as regular cleaning of their litter box.
