Perro de Presa Canario

Spanish’s Canary Islands are home to the sturdy breed known as the Perro de Presa Canario. Spanish is the breed’s original language, and Presa Canario is a common abbreviation. The Presa Canario, when properly educated and trained, is gentle, faithful, and obedient to its family; nonetheless, they are natural guard dogs who are quite wary of outsiders and will occasionally act aggressively toward them. The Presa Canario is a strong-willed breed, as seen by its rectangular body that is substantial and muscular, its alert expression, and its black mask.

Care as a Pet/ In Captivity

Although loving and dedicated to its family, the Presa Canario breed is typically better suited for experienced, energetic owners who can properly socialize their pet and offer plenty of outside activity opportunities. The breed may need more opportunities for socialization and training early in life to securely interact with humans, particularly in a home with children or other pets, because of its past as a guard dog. The breed is strong-willed, powerful, intellectual, and very wary of strangers.

Exercise

This high-energy breed will yearn for daily activity, like outdoor playtime or numerous daily walks. They are eager to please their owner and are quite trainable, so they can also pick up new tricks or play indoor games like hide-and-seek. The Presa Canario can participate in more strenuous outdoor activities including swimming, hiking, and ball fetching or Discs.

Grooming

The Perro de Presa Canario will occasionally need to be bathed to keep its short coat clean, but considering that it sheds, regular brushing and grooming may be necessary. Additionally, this breed has strong, quick-growing nails that require routine trimming with a nail clipper or grinder. Regular examinations of the dog’s short ears and brushing of the teeth are recommended.

Nutrition and Diet

The Presa Canario will thrive on any high-quality diet, whether it is prepared in a restaurant or at home (with guidance from a veterinarian). They may need more water than the ordinary dog because they are a larger, more active breed, and they may also prefer higher-protein foods.
