Pegmatite

Pegmatite

Appearance

Many pegmatite bodies are closely linked to masses of fine-grained aplite. The majority of pegmatite bodies are tabular, podlike (cigar-shaped), or irregular in form. They range in size from single feldspar crystals to dikes (tabular bodies injected in fissures) many tens of meters thick and more than a kilometer long.

Geographical Distribution

Pegmatites are found in all regions of the world and are most common in relatively old geologic rocks. While some are dispersed across the rocks that surround intrusive magmatic rocks, others are found inside sizable intrusive igneous rocks.

Metaphysical Properties

Pegmatite, which has become known for reducing stress and anxiety, can assist us in taking a deep breath to let go of any tension, worry, or anxiety we may be hanging onto. Then, we can continue on with our hearts open to whatever the future holds.

Chemical Composition

The majority of pegmatites share a silicic composition with granite, consisting primarily of quartz, feldspar, and mica. Mafic pegmatites and less common intermediate compositions are known, nevertheless.

Uses

  • Pegmatite is utilized as a stone for architecture. When pegmatite is sound and visually appealing, it can be polished and cut into slabs for use in countertops, building facing, tile and other ornamental stone items. The polished stone can then be marketed commercially as “granite.” Because migmatite has huge crystal minerals, it is employed in gemstone mining.
  • Mica is frequently extracted in large sheets from pegmatite and used to manufacture optical filters, detector windows, circuit boards, electronic device components, and many other goods.
  • In addition, pegmatite is a common filler for a wide range of products and the main component of glass and ceramics.
