Peacock Day Gecko

peacock-gecko

Description:

Scientific name: Phelsuma quadriocellata

Life span: Up to 15 years

A species of gecko called Phelsuma quadriocellata is also referred to as the peacock day gecko. They have sticky toe pads and lidless eyes like other arboreal geckos. Bright green is the dominant color, with subtle red patterns and a white bottom. A blue tail is conceivable. The big dark dots on either side serve as a distinguishing feature. There are two of these places in certain communities, and four in others.

Native Region/Habitat

It is a common to abundant, widespread reptile that is indigenous to coastal eastern Madagascar. In Madagascar, this gecko can be found in a variety of low- to mid-elevation habitat types, including forests and places where people live and farm their land.

Behavior:

The omnivorous, diurnal peacock day gecko (Phelsuma quadriocellata) is a species of arboreal gecko. Because they are a purely arboreal species, they prefer the habitat of tropical forests and spend the most of their time in the air. They are typically too swift and frightened to handle, like all day geckos, but because of their vivid colours and diurnal habits—both traits shared by the genus—they make excellent pets to observe.

Care As a pet/In captivity:

Habitat: Madagascar is the home of Peacock Day Geckos. There should be foliage for concealment and branches that are horizontal and diagonal for perching. Rounds of cork bark are frequently wanted as cover. You can keep peacock day geckos alone or in groups. To prevent harm when kept together, geckos should be the same size. In general, two females get along well. If kept together, a male and female will probably reproduce.

Size: A cage with climbing access, like an 18″ x 18″ x 24″ glass terrarium, is the ideal size.

Substrate: A substrate that is absorbent is preferred because of the humidity requirements. It is suggested to use coconut fibre or peat moss.

Temperature: The ideal basking temperature for peacock day geckos is 85–90°F. Keep the temperature in the enclosure’s cold end between 70°F and 75°F. Be careful while choosing the basking location because a tall, narrow cage will make it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain the desired temperature gradient.

Humidity: You should provide a small bowl of water. As babies can easily die if they fall in, make sure it’s not too deep.

Watering: You should provide a small bowl of water. As babies can easily die if they fall in, make sure it’s not too deep.

Lighting: Because this species is nocturnal, two light bulbs are needed. The heat lamp, which also emits UVA, is one. UVB lighting is the second. On the package of the UVB lamp, UVB will be clearly identified. It is not UVB if the package doesn’t state that it is.
