Peach-Faced Lovebird

Peach-Faced Lovebird

Description

Life span: Up to 20 years

Due to their clown-like demeanour, gorgeous plumage, and propensity to reproduce like bunnies, peach-faced lovebirds are as well-liked as they are charming. Whether kept in pairs or alone, they make wonderful pets that provide a pleasant chattering and fascinating antics to any home.

The 6 inch long peach-faced lovebird comes in a variety of hues and dimensions. The name comes from the fact that the typical bird is green with a brilliant blue rump and rosy-peach cheeks. Other colors, or “mutations,” come in a variety of shades of green, blue, yellow, violet, and purple, as well as creamy white, practically black, and everything in between. The faces also come in a variety of hues.

Habitat/Native Region

It resides in the arid, open terrain of southwest Africa. Its range reaches northwest South Africa’s lower Orange River valley from southwest Angola. Broad-leaved woodland, semi-desert, and mountainous regions up to 1,600 meters above sea level are among its habitats. It gathers near swimming pools to drink and is dependent on water supplies.

Behavior

The peach-faced lovebird is a great escape artist who is constantly vivacious and prepared to play. These birds enjoy the “married life” to the owner’s exclusion when kept in couples. If kept alone and given regular attention, the peach-faced lovebird is just as lovable as the family lap dog. When neglected, even for a short period of time, many lovebirds revert and turn irritable.

Care

If given the right care, peach-faced lovebirds can live for 12 to 15 years. Give them a healthy, balanced diet that is high in fruits and vegetables because they are prone to nutritional disorders. There is a chance of calcium insufficiency or egg binding since females will deposit eggs even if there is no male around. Consult a veterinarian if a person observes any signs of odd behavior or lethargy.
