Panay Monitor

Panay monitor

Description:

Scientific name: Varanus mabitang

Life span: up to 10 years

Panay monitor is one of three mostly frugivorous monitor lizard species found only in the Philippines. Due to its very melanistic, practically solid-black coloration, this species stands out dramatically. Some trunk, nuchal, and limb scales have a dorsal black tone with a smattering of small yellow spots on the posterior end. They have dark gray to black color on the ventral surface. Another characteristic of these lizards is a crest of sharp scales that run down the back; however, this feature is more obvious in juveniles than in adults. Two black stripes on either side of the head and neck area give Panay lizards their distinctive appearance.

Native Region/Habitat

The Panay monitor is only found on Panay Island in the Philippines.  It needs primary forest environments with enough fruiting trees and established rainforests.

Behavior:

This is a carnivore that prefers to eat insects but will also consume snakes, tiny lizards, and birds. The unique lizards of the Panay have pointed teeth that are useful for grabbing prey. They can better smell their food because of their forked tongues.  Their long tail aids in their balance when running. They don’t chew their food before swallowing it whole. These lizards may lay up to three batches of eggs each year and are often monogamous.

Care As a pet/In captivity:

The IUCN has given the species its Endangered status. It seems to be significantly threatened by habitat loss and is a prime target for hunters. Only 12 animals have been collected since 2002, suggesting that the species is rare. The island is currently undergoing conservation efforts.
