Pale Fox

pale-fox.

Description

Scientific Name: Vulpes pallida

Lifespan: 10 years

A little fox that lives in Africa is called a pale fox. Its isolated habitat and sandy coat, which mixes in nicely with the desert-like landscape, contribute to it being one of the least studied of all canid species. It has quite fine, sandy-colored fur that gradually turns white, as it gets closer to the abdomen. The legs are rufous, and the flanks are paler than the dorsal pelage, merging into buffy-white underparts. A dark ring surrounds the eye, and the fox has a pale face with relatively long whiskers and an extended nose. Long and bushy, with a noticeable black tip and a dark patch above the tail gland, the creature’s tail is reddish-brown in colour. Although huge in comparison to other foxes, the ears are typical of a canid that lives in the desert.

Behavior

Pale foxes are typically nocturnal. They are gregarious animals that live in large burrows, usually in small families with a parent and youngster. They spend the daytime in tunnels that can drop up to 2 metres to the ground and are up to 15 metres long, where they sleep. At dusk, pale foxes emerge from their burrows to go searching for food.

Distribution

Pale foxes can be found in the semi-arid Sahelian region of Africa, which stretches from Mauritania and Senegal through Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad to the Red Sea and is bordered by the Sahara Desert. They occasionally travel south into the savanna but typically live in stony or sandy dry terrain.

Housing

Our Pale Foxes are housed in a sizable, customized cage with access to the outdoors and a heated interior. These creatures can climb stairs and ramps with ease, making them excellent climbers. Within their outdoor area, they can climb and play on tree branches. The enclosure’s interior is furnished with shavings.

Diet

A variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, insects, eggs, small rodents, and Taste of the Wild (high-quality dog food), are fed to our Pale Foxes. They receive all the nourishment they require from this well-balanced meal, which mimics what they would eat in the wild. Additionally, they take pleasure in special treats that add various fruits and invertebrate species to their meals.

Enrichment

Our foxes are just as lovable and entertaining as a typical household dog. They adore playing with their rope toys and squeaky toys. Using plush, cardboard, and prefabricated toys, campers will create enrichment items for them during the summer. To keep them engaged and enjoying a happy life, spend time socializing with them as well!
