The most prevalent parrotlet species is the Pacific parrotlet, which has gained popularity as one of the nation’s most beloved little birds. Due to their diminutive size, they are sometimes known as “pocket parrots,” and they may even fit in a shirt pocket! They are commonly compared to Amazon parrots, a parrot family believed to be their close cousins, and have been described as having the demeanor of a “big bird in a small bird’s body.” With their small, robust bodies and somewhat blunt tails, they do resemble Amazons. The male has a blue streak behind the eye and green rump coverts. Females lack blue coloring and may display a very slight blue hue.
Habitat/Native Region
The subtropical or tropical dry forests, moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, and severely degraded former forests are preferred by Pacific parrotlets. Because Pacific parrotlets are non-migratory, they spend the entire year in the same place.
As Pet
Behavior
Parrotlets are typically affectionate, tenacious, and fierce. A pair of parrotlets would probably bond to each other to the owner’s exclusion if they are kept together, therefore if someone wants a nice companion, they should only retain one bird. On the other hand, parrotlets are easy to pair up with, dimorphic, and enjoy each other’s company. Although they can be kept in calm groups in sizable aviaries as well, it is recommended to keep them apart from other species. Be aware that they will quarrel and battle for territory and possessions.
Care
Despite the fact that parrotlets are tiny, a small cage is insufficient. The ideal cage has 1/4-inch bar spacing and is broad and roomy. These birds are lively, so they need a lot of room to play and toys to keep them occupied. Swings and boings are popular for parrotlets, as well as parrot kabobs and other shreddable toys.
