The Oriental Cockroach (Blatta Orientalis) is a big species of cockroach, with adult males measuring 18–29 mm (0.71–1.14 in) and adult females measuring 20–27 mm. They are sometimes known as water bugs because they prefer humid environments (0.79–1.06 in). It has a glossy body and is dark brown or black in hue. The female looks somewhat different from the male; she has non-functional wings right below her head despite first appearing to be wingless. She is larger in stature than the man. The male has a narrower body and lengthy, brown wings that extend over three-quarters of the abdomen. They are both incapable of flight.

Habitat

There are both indoor and outdoor populations of the Oriental Cockroach. In warm weather, it can be discovered outside in sewers, garbage cans, or even under fallen leaves or stones.

The Oriental Cockroach, Blatta orientalis, is widespread throughout the world. There isn’t a place on earth where this insect doesn’t exist. In places all across the world, the Oriental Cockroach coexists with Blatta germanica in about 10% of properties.

The Oriental Cockroach is a glossy, dark-brown or black insect. The younger members are less glossy and darker than the adults. Blatta orientalis males are smaller than females. 

  • Length

Males typically measure 2.6 centimetres in length, and females typically measure 2.6 to 3.25 cm. The average female weighs.95 grams, whereas the average male weighs about.45 grams. 

  • Abdomen

The female’s abdomen is wider than the male’s, making her more slim overall. 

  • Wings

The fact that in the male species wings are present that almost reach the abdomen. Compared to the female merely having pads as her wings is another distinction between the sexes. Both have wings or pads, but only one can fly. Although the nymphs’ shapes are comparable to those of adults, they lack wings.

Feeding

This species is omnivorous, which means it will ingest both living things and inanimate objects. Blatta orientalis can consume both hard and soft materials, and it can also drink any kind of liquid because it lacks mouthparts that are designed specifically for eating particular items. It primarily consumes trash or any kind of decomposing organic materials, but it’s favorite foods include anything sweet or starchy.

Blatta orientalis is considered by many to be the dirtiest insect that invades and infests homes, which has economic significance for humans. This roach can contaminate food and emit a foul stench. It contaminates human food by switching back and forth between rubbish and human food, which exposes the food to infections that can cause food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, and other disorders.

Can this Cockroach be kept as a pet or not and Why?

Since they currently reside in the house rent-free, nobody would want to intentionally turn them into a pet.
