Behavior/Temperament

The northern flying squirrel is a very active animal. They prefer to make nests on large diameter branches of the trees with the help of leaves called Drey. Northern flying squirrels are incredibly social creatures that gather in one nest during the winter and talk to one another all night long. Although these creatures leave their nests at dusk.  Ultrasonic frequencies are used for communication, as well as a number of bird-like squeaky sounds. They nest in large groups throughout the winter, occasionally. About 20 squirrels live together to maintain temperature but this may reduce to 5 during summers. They maintain their own nest meticulously clean and well-groomed.

Care/Grooming

If you can appropriately accommodate their unique demands, they can be good pets. Flying squirrels utilize their small, keen teeth to crack open nuts and seeds. Therefore, especially for young children, its biting can be uncomfortable. There is a reduced risk of a bite if the squirrel was reared by hand and is accustomed to everyday handling. However, all animals, tamed or not, have the potential to bite when startled or aroused. Despite their small size, flying squirrels require a cage that allows them to move around freely.
