Norfolk Terrier

norfolk-terrier.

A little terrier dog breed from the United Kingdom, the Norfolk terrier has a short, wiry coat and little shedding. Norfolks were originally designed to eradicate mice in barns, so they are strong and athletic tiny dogs. Their body is balanced, and they have small, drop ears and dark, oval eyes. A mane is produced by the neck and shoulders having longer fur. Like most terrier breeds, Norfolk terriers are alert, lively, and extremely loyal to their owners.

Care as Pet/ In Captivity

Although Norfolk terriers are fun and active dogs, it doesn’t take a lot of activity to wear them out. They do need to be groomed with some expertise. They should start their training early and frequently because they are active, enthusiastic puppies.

Grooming

Each week, give your Norfolk terrier’s coat a brushing to get rid of any loose fur and grime. The coat will then need to be manually stripped at least twice a year to remove dead fur. For this procedure, you’ll need to either find a groomer or figure out how to do it yourself. Avoid cutting the coat because this destroys the texture.

Every four to six weeks, or whenever it gets dirty, give your dog a bath. However, check its ears at least once every week to see whether they require cleaning. Additionally, give it a monthly nail trim, and ideally brush its teeth every day.

Exercise

Plan to exercise your dog for at least an hour each day. Walking, hiking, and active fun are all excellent methods to release some energy. This dog can be mentally challenged with puzzle toys as well. Agility and tracking are two dog activities in which Norfolk terriers can thrive.

When outdoors, be sure to keep your Norfolk terrier in a safe enclosure or on a leash. Otherwise, it can become agitated because of its hunting drive and start chasing after tiny animals or other apparent prey.

Nutrition and Diet

Keep fresh water on hand at all times for your Norfolk terrier. Feed it a canine diet that is nutritionally balanced, often through two measured meals per day. To ensure that you’re addressing your dog’s specific needs, be sure to review the type of food you’re feeding him as well as the quantity with your veterinarian. Pay attention to treats and other extra food as well. These tiny dogs are skilled beggars. But on their little frames, even a pound’s worth of weight gain might be significant.
