Description
Scientific Name: Canis dingo hallstromi
Small- to medium-sized puppies with an elegant appearance are New Guinea Singing Dogs. A soft undercoat and a rough outer coat make up the NGSD’s luxurious double coat. The breed is available in a variety of hues, including black and tan, white, red in tones ranging from fawn to deep rust, and red sable with dark brown or black tipping on the guard hairs. Small, trapezoidal eyes, small, prickly, widely spaced ears, and thick, bushy tails are also characteristics of NGSDs.
Habitat
The Highlands of Papua New Guinea are home to the New Guinea Singing Dogs (NGSD). Mountains and swampy highland regions in Papua New Guinea are the New Guinea singing dog’s reported habitat. The mixed forest, beech and mossy woodland, sub-alpine coniferous forest, and alpine grassland are the major vegetation zones.
Behavior
New Guinea Singing Dogs Singing Dogs are independent, intelligent, and active animals. With their humans, they form bonds and joyfully display affection. However, they lack the typical canine want to please mentality. Furthermore, they have a propensity to avoid interacting with outsiders. Singers are perceptive canines who enjoy exploring their surroundings. A dog that is a considerable flight risk when off-leash is one that possesses that characteristic in addition to a strong hunting instinct. Moreover, it could be difficult to capture them once they run away or chase after anything.
Small animals are at risk because of the NGSD’s prey drive. Additionally, they often behave aggressively towards other dogs, especially those of the same sex. They function best in homes without other pets because of these factors. Singers have additional unusual abilities in addition to their melodic cries. They can climb trees and are skilled at unlocking cabinet doors. Therefore, with this breed, high fences without nearby trees and meticulous dog-proofing are essential.
As Pet/ In Captivity
Nutrition
A high-quality meal designed for the New Guinea Singing Dog’s life stage (e.g., puppy, adult, senior) will help it thrive. Keep an eye on their food consumption and measure their quantities to prevent overeating to help them maintain a healthy weight. As a general rule, treats should comprise no more than 10% of a dog’s daily caloric intake.
Grooming
If necessary, brush and wash your Singer to maintain their coat clean and clear of debris. And remember to cut those nails. If they become excessively long, they could hurt your dog or even make it difficult for him to run or walk.
After a meal, singers frequently “brush” their teeth by rubbing their nails across them. It is a sweet and distinctive behavior. However, it doesn’t replace a regular dental care regimen. The best defense against dental disease is routine, human-assisted at-home brushing of the teeth after professional cleanings.
Exercise
Being active puppies, NGSDs require regular exercise to maintain their happiness and health. They can stay active by going on long walks and hikes. To prevent them from running off after other animals, just make sure to keep them on a leash when in open spaces.
