Characteristics and Genetics

In the past, mining and agriculture were two common uses for New Forests. However, during the course of the 1800s, the breed rapidly developed with the addition of Thoroughbred and Arabian blood, making them well-suited for a variety of disciplines, including cross-country, dressage, driving, showjumping, and gymkhanas. They make wonderful family ponies since they are sharp, steady, docile, and kind.

Asturcón and Potok horses are of a Celtic lineage, according to DNA tests. Many breeds have contributed to the New Forest pony’s foundation bloodstock, but as of right now, only ponies whose parents are both classified as purebred in the studbook’s approved section are permitted to do so. Children and adults can ride the New Forest pony, it can be driven in a harness, and it competes successfully in horse shows against bigger horses.

Similar to the Dartmoor, the famous wild ponies that wander the New Forest are not usually seen as real representatives of the breed due to the challenges of maintaining purity in the open countryside.

Grooming Requirements

The same fundamental grooming techniques that work for any other horse breed will be adequate for New Forest Pony. Purchasing an equine grooming kit with a variety of brushes will enable individuals to complete the task while developing a relationship with the animal. Additionally, every grooming session is a fantastic chance to check a pony’s body and hooves for any indications of an infection or injuries that require immediate attention.

A curry comb is a useful tool to use when beginning to groom a pony. A person could use this comb to remove trash, filth, and extra hair from the owner pet’s body by moving it in circular motions. Users could clean pony’s legs and other delicate regions with a body finishing brush while getting rid of even more dirt and hair. A shedding blade and a handy brush can both be used to further clean the coat. Use a moist, soft cloth to wipe the area around the pony’s eyes and ears when the coat is clean and shining. To keep a pony’s mane and tail untangled and to give them a silky, smooth appearance, a person might also use a mane comb and a tail brush. The hooves might then be completely cleaned out with a hoof pick. And if the owner ever needs to bathe a pony, it’s better to use a mild shampoo made for horses.
