Characteristics and Genetics
The Mulefoot probably descended from swine that the Spanish introduced to the Gulf Coast, however it is unclear exactly when they first appeared as syndactyl animals. Although Aristotle’s works mention pigs with single hooves, only the Mulefoot population—which has a recognized standard type—can be termed a breed.
The breed may have ancestors that are comparable to those of the Choctaw hog. The sows are regarded for being excellent moms, and they often have litters of 5 to 6 piglets.
