Characteristics and Genetics

A domestic pig breed with Chinese origins is the meishan pig. It is a subgroup of the Taihu pig and was given the name Meishan after the Chinese prefecture of Meishan.

The USDA Agricultural Research Service brought this breed to America in the late 1980s. Due to its propensity for excess fat and sluggish development rate, this breed did not enjoy much popularity in farms. But due to the early maturity of both sows and boars, it is regarded as one of the most prolific breeds in the world.

At the age of 2.5 to 3 months, it enters puberty. It produces larger litters of 15–16 piglets every litter.
